Had a house fire that destroyed a portion of the kitchen, upstairs bathroom and bedroom closet. It was an electrical fire so all appliances had to be replaced. Stovers took our belongings into their care and safe keeping, or so I was told. They also did the cleanup on the house. The cleanup of the house was well done, but MANY of our belongings were either broken, ruined by harsh cleaning agents, or missing. We had several boxes packed, sealed, and stored in the basement which was no where near the fire and they were all dismantled and not put back the way they were found, and as I mentioned, many items were put back broken. An expensive 60 year-old oil painting with gold gilded frame was dropped and chipped, and the canvas was punctured. A new carpet cleaner was dismantled and put back together wrong so it no longer works, and the lid to the cleaner’s soap dispenser is missing. An elliptical exercise machine given to me by my brother who recently passed was dropped and the piece that monitors your steps and calories was broken off. I had several gold tone bangle bracelets that were kept in a purse in my closet that are missing. I can go on and on, but I think you get the point. There’s no way I could have done the job myself, so I’m grateful to have had help, but many of these things were sentimental keepsakes and cannot be replaced. It was heartbreaking to have our belongings that were spared by the fire to be ruined or destroyed by the people who were hired to help make this devastating time less painful. My message to you is that if you have anything of sentimental value, or that cannot be replaced, take it with you. My message to Stovers is, slow down and try to be more careful. Don’t use harsh cleaning agents on things that obviously cannot withstand them. Fire victims have been devastated and traumatized. Don’t add to their grief by damaging and/or losing their personal belongings.
